영화 <태백산맥> 각색을 통해 본 사관(史觀) 및 서사 쟁점 고찰

1989년에 전 10권으로 출간된 조정래의 소설 『태백산맥』이 1994년에 임권택의 영화로 발표되었다. 소설과 영화 『태백산맥』은 흔쾌한 영화화 동의 과정을 거쳤으며,‘분단의 극복’을 주제로 공유하면서도 서사특성에서 상이점들을 보여주고 있다. 특히 민족 내부의 좌우 대립의 원인이라 할 지배-피지배 집단의 윤리성에 따른 성격규정과 한국전쟁의 발발원인, 그리고 소설 인물의 영화적 재창조 등에서 대비되는 차이점을 보이고 있다. 이는 조정래와 임권택의 역사관의 차이에서 비롯된 것이지만 역사가 창작의 세계로 소환되었을 때 요구되는 객관성과 지향가치의 항구성 면에서 평가되어야 할 쟁점이 되고 있다. 소설은 염상진을 비롯한 좌익 집단의 성격을 이상적 평등세계를 지향하는 지선(至善)의 이미지로 형상화하고, 지주 등 지배집단을 패륜적 이미지로 그림으로써 대립과 분단의 원인을 외세를 등에 업은 지배집단의 패악적 행태에서 찾고 있다. 그러나 영화는 두 집단의 역사적 공과를 동일한 질량으로 형상화하는 동시에 양 집단의 과오를 위무함으로써 분단극복의 단초를 제시하려 하고 있다. 소설 『태백산맥』의 인물들은 좌익의 경우 대부분 영웅성이 부여되고, 이상적 이데올로기와 행동력을 겸비한 자들이다. 그러나 영화 <태백산맥>의 인물들은 그 자신이 빨치산 가족 출신으로서 격랑의 한국전쟁 전후를 거쳐 온 임권택의 체험을 통해 형상화된 캐릭터들이다. 이 같은 소설과 영화 『태백산맥』 두 작품에 대한 평가는 평자 각인의 이념지향에 따라 다를 수 있으나, 역사예술이 추구해야 할 중립적이며 객관적인 가치의 형상화 면에서 상응하는 수준의 중립적 평가척도가 요구된다 하겠다. 이는 대중예술로서의 두 작품이 얻어낸 성취의 정도와는 다른 층위의 문제일 것이다.
Abstract
The Taebaek Mountains of Jo, Jung Rae’s total 10 novels, which had been published in 1989, was released in Lim, Kwon Taek’s movie in 1994. The novelist readily agreed to make the novel to movie, The Taebaek Mountains. and it has shown the differences in the narrative characteristics as sharing ‘Overcoming the division’ of the theme. In particular, it shows the differences in contrast of character formation by ethicality of dominance-subordinance group which is the cause of inside nation’s right and left conflict, the cause of outbreak of the Korean War, and Cinematic re-creation of the fictional character, etc. While this is derived from the difference in the view of History of Jo, Jung Rae and Lim, Kwon Taek, it has become an issue to be evaluated in the side of objectivity and permanency is requested when it has a creative activity based on the fact of history. The novel is shaping the image of the highest purity as the left group including Sang Jin Yeom is ideal for equality-oriented world, and the behavior of governed population’s wickedness in the foreign power which is the cause of conflict and division by drawing dominant groups such as the image of depravity. However, the film is shaping the historical achievement and mistake of the two groups in the same mass. And, at the same time, the movie has proposed to include overcoming division by consoling each other from the mistake. In case of that figures of the novel, The Taebaek Mountains granted to the left group, is mostly granted to be heroic, and they have ideal ideology and ability to act. However, the figures of movie, The Taebaek Mountains are shaping the character through the front and rear Korean War experience of Lim, Kwon Taek who is the family of North Korean partisan. Although the evaluation of a novel and a movie, The Taebaek Mountains may vary depending on evaluators’ ideological orientation, the neutral and objective evaluation scales are required when discussing about this historical narration. This may be the other issues which are different from the fulfillment obtained by these two works as the popular arts.
