들뢰즈 영화철학의 삼중구도: ‘이미지’, ‘사유’, ‘배움’

Abstract

Today, the development of digital technology is transforming and replacing film images. This, as Gilles Deleuze put, goes to the extent of declaring “the death of cinema.” If so, how can we explain the persistent vitality of cinema images, which has lasted until today? Deleuze considered the essential meaning of cinema images as cultivating and teaching the thinking ability for a subject to be able to resist the perfect information system of modern society. For Deleuze, “watching” a movie is not just a visual act; it is rather part of philosophical thinking activities where the audience is drawn into the realm of thinking in terms of raising problems in the real world, and during the process, the power of emotional thinking, which is different from rational thinking, is discovered. Therefore, the audience gets to experience an infinite and potential emotional thinking that transcends the sense of reality throughout the movie and to finally develop an eye for “differences” while learning and acquiring such thinking. Such aesthetic feeling of cinema becomes the driving force to change the life of a subject who is accustomed to the controlled modern society. The thesis of “image” – “thinking” – “apprenticeship” of the cinema presented by Deleuze can be basically understood in the liberation and practice of thinking. Therefore, Deleuze’s question, “what is the cinema,” is directly related to the formation of a cultural subject that Dasein must create through the reflection and realization of thinking. As long as such a subject has not yet come, the inner struggle of cinema should be continued going forward.
