Abstract
Christian Petzold is one of the best German auteur directors of his generation, with a steady stream of films over the past two decades. This article examines Petzold's cinematic characteristics by analyzing his film Barbara(2012). As one might expect from the fact that he is one of the representatives of the Berlin School, which emerged at the turn of the millennium and has been writing a new page in the history of German cinema, Petzold is characterized by his careful attention to reality and personal filmic style. In Barbara, his sixth theatrical film, Petzold's signature cinematic aesthetic is still evident, but his cinematic attitude is different from his previous works. Unlike his previous films, which had been dominated by a microscopic view of contemporary reality, in Barbara, he chose a historical subject as the backdrop for the story. In addition, the filmic structure with genre elements, is taken apart from the anti-narrative characteristic of Berlin School films. In order to analyze these aspects of Barbara, this paper provides an archaeological understanding of the protagonist‘s daily life and reality, which are characterized by Petzold's personal style and melodramatic composition. In Barbara, Petzold makes a distance himself from a representational attitude that seeks to reconstruct the German(East German) past from a particular point of view; instead, he allows the film to function as a way to relate to the present by unfolding the daily lives and realities of specific individuals in the "Jetztzeit" of the time. Through this discussion, we see that Petzold still maintains his "gaze deeply into the interior of German reality" through his personal minimalist style.
