이 논문은 기술적으로 신체를 조작, 합성, 생성할 수 있는 시대에 영화 속 신체 이미지가 제작되는 원리와 그것이 작품의 서사와 의미에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴본다. 혼성적 신체는 합성의 원리를 따라서 배우의 이미지, 대역의 이미지, 컴퓨터 그래픽 이미지 등을 이음매 없이 결합한 것을 지칭한다. 그것은 크게 조작과 생성으로 구분해서 설명할 수 있다. 조작을 강조한 혼성적 신체는 디지털 메이크업이나 디에이징과 같은 기술을 활용하여 원본 신체의 일부를 수정한다. 이 경우 배우의 나이를 조작하는 기술적 효과를 바탕으로 인간의 유한성과 시간의 복잡성을 다룰 수 있다. 생성을 강조한 혼성적 신체는 모션 캡처와 같은 기술을 활용하여 비인간적인 형상을 만든다. 이 경우 로봇, 외계인, 유인원과 같은 비인간 존재의 시각화를 바탕으로 인간과 비인간의 경계에 대해 고찰할 수 있다. 인간의 신체 이미지의 조작과 생성이 점점 자동화되는 오늘날 혼성적 신체에 대한 탐구는 영화의 형식적 변화에 대한 논의를 넘어서 영화를 둘러싼 동시대의 기술적, 매체적, 사회적 환경의 변화와 긴밀한 관계를 갖는다. 이것이 ‘그 몸은 누구의 것인가?’라는 질문이 유효한 이유이자 혼성적 신체에 대한 문해력이 필요한 이유이다.
Abstract
This paper examines the principles of body image production in film, in an era where bodies can be manipulated, synthesized, and created technologically, and the impact these principles have on the narrative and meaning of the work. Hybrid bodies, based on the principles of synthesis, seamlessly combine images of actors, body doubles, and computer-generated images. They can be broadly categorized into manipulation and generation. Hybrid bodies, emphasizing manipulation, utilize technologies like digital makeup or de-aging to modify parts of the original body. In this case, the technological effects of manipulating an actor's age can be leveraged to address human finitude and the complexities of time. Hybrid bodies, emphasizing generation, utilize technologies like motion capture to create inhuman forms. In this case, the visualization of nonhuman entities like robots, aliens, and apes can be used to examine the boundaries between the human and the nonhuman. In today's world, where the manipulation and generation of human body images are increasingly automated, the exploration of hybrid bodies transcends discussions of formal changes in film and is intimately connected to the shifting technological, media, and social environments surrounding film. This is why the question, “Whose body does it belong to?” is so valid and why literacy about hybrid bodies is necessary.
