존 웨슬리가 주장하는 완전 성화로 나아가는 구원론적 여정에 대한 해석은 매우 다양하다. 본 논문은 현대 웨슬리 신학 전문가 중의 한 사람인 랜디 매덕스의 완전 성화 이해를 비판적으로 검토하는 논문이다. 특히, 랜디 매덕스가 웨슬리 신학을 동방정교회의 구속론의 빛으로 해석함으로써 빗어진 결론을 비평적으로 재구성하면서, 동방교회의 신화적 의미의 성화 개념을 비판하고 있다. 저자는 웨슬리가 제시한 구원의 서정 속에서 완전 성화 개념을 이해하기 위해서, 웨슬리가 어느 전통에도 치우치지 않는 성경 중심의 신학 이해를 소지하고 있었다는 점과 칭의 이후에 성도의 죄에 대해서 매우 심각하게 논하고 있다는 사실에 입각하여 웨슬리의 성화론을 성찰할 것을 주장하고 있다. 이러한 의미에서 웨슬리의 설교, “광야의 상태”는 매우 의미있는 설교라고 제언한다.
Abstract
There are various interpretations of the soteriological journey toward ‘entire sanctification’ as proposed by John Wesley. This paper critically examines the interpretation of “entire sanctification” by Randy L. Maddox, one of the leading scholars in modern Wesleyan theology. In particular, this paper critiques the mythical and deifying emphasis of sanctification in Eastern Orthodox approaches to sanctification, which, according to this study, unduly influences Maddox’s reading of Wesley’s theology in his Responsible Grace. To properly understand Wesley’s concept of entire sanctification, this paper argues that his doctrine must be grounded in his Bible-centered perspective-one not bound to any single tradition-and must take seriously his treatment of sin in the believer’s life after justification. In this light, Wesley’s sermon “The Wilderness State” offers a key insight into the deeper meaning of sanctification in his theology.
