2022 개정 초등영어 교육과정 기반 3, 4학년 교과서의 파닉스 분석
Analysis of Phonics in Third- and Fourth-Grade English Textbooks Based on the 2022 Revised National Curriculum

2022 개정 교육과정에 따른 초등영어 3, 4학년 교과서 8종이 최종 검정을 통과하여 2025년 교육현장에서 사용을 앞두고 있다. 2022 개정 초등영어 교육과정의 대표적인 특징 중의 하나가 파닉스 교육의 강조이다. 본 연구에서는 분석 대상 8종 교과서에 나타난 파닉스를 (1) 양적인 관점과 (2) 파닉스 규칙의 종류와 제시 순서의 관점에서 비교·분석하였다. 분석 결과, 8종 교과서는 평균적으로 2015 개정 교육과정 기반 3, 4학년 교과서에 비해 파닉스에 배정된 차시가 대폭 증가하였고, 파닉스 규칙의 수도 평균 10개 정도 더 많이 제시함으로써 2022 개정 교육과정에서 강조한 파닉스의 중요성이교과서에 반영되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 파닉스 규칙의 종류와 제시 순서에 있어서는 8종 교과서간의 차이가 매우 컸다. 예를 들어, 가장 기본적인 자음 규칙이 단모음 이후에 제시되는 교과서도 있었고 전혀 제시되지 않은 교과서도 있었다. 또한 자음과 단모음 두 개의 규칙만을 제시하여 파닉스가매우 간단한 교과서도 있는 반면에, 자음과 단모음을 포함하여 총 여섯 개의 규칙을 제시한 교과서도있었다. 이와 같은 교과서 간의 파닉스 난이도 차이는 5~6학년군 교과서에서는 더욱 커질 것으로 예상된다. 전체적으로, 2022 개정 초등영어 교육과정 기반 3, 4학년 8종 교과서는 교육과정의 내용에따라 파닉스의 중요성을 잘 반영하였지만, 교과서 간의 파닉스 난이도가 매우 큰 문제점이 있다.
Abstract
Eight textbooks for the 3rd and 4th graders of elementary school English, based on the 2022 revised curriculum, are going to be used in schools starting in 2025. One important characteristic of the 2022 revised elementary English curriculum is the emphasis on phonics. In this study, phonics in the eight textbooks is compared and analyzed from a quantitative perspective and in terms of the types of phonic rules and their order of presentation. The textbooks based on the 2022 national curriculum allotted much more class time to phonics than the textbooks based on the 2015 national curriculum did. Additionally, the 2022 textbooks included, on average, about 10 more phonics rules than the 2015 textbooks. This result showed that the emphasis on phonics in the 2022 national curriculum was well reflected in the textbooks. However, there was a significant difference between the eight textbooks in the types of phonics rules and their order of presentation. For example, some textbooks presented only two phonics rules (consonant rules and short vowel rules), whereas others included six rules, with consonant and short vowel rules among them. This disparity resulted in large differences in the level of difficulty between the textbooks. Moreover, this difference in phonics difficulty is expected to widen in the textbooks for the 5th and 6th grades. Overall, the eight textbooks for the 3rd and 4th graders reflected the importance of phonics, as indicated by the 2022 revised national curriculum, but there remains a significant issue: the difference in the teaching of phonics between the textbooks is substantial, both in terms of the types of phonics rules and their order of presentation.
