Abstract
This study was conducted to compare the inferential types of poor comprehenders and average comprehenders in reading comprehension. We presented two types of texts (narrative and explanatory) to 54 elementary school students, and used the "Think-aloud" method to look at the differences in inferential patterns. First, the Mann-Whitney U test, a non-parametric test, was conducted to examine the differences in the inferences of poor comprehenders and average comprehenders. The results showed a significant difference between the two groups in terms of 'valid elaborative inferences', 'valid predictive inferences', 'bridging inferences', 'text repetitions/paraphrases,' and 'no responses/ meaningless responses'. Second, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to examine the differences in the inferential patterns according to the type of text(narrative and expository). As a result, average comprehenders showed significant differences in terms of 'valid elaborative inferences', 'invalid elaborative inferences', 'associations', and 'bridging inferences' depending on the type of texts. On the other hand, in the case of poor comprehenders there was significant differences between 'associations' and ''bridging inferences' depending on the type of texts. Finally, based on these results, we suggested the intervention plan for the improvement of the inferential ability and the limitation of this study.
