Abstract
As multimodal texts are readily accessible around us, there emerges a need to reconsider the print-focused, traditional concept of literacy and expand its concept to encompass multimodal literacy in English language learning and teaching. In particular, we can easily encounter story picturebooks as multimodal texts in recent times. The primary feature of picturebooks as multimodal texts is that print is the only one type of various modes to create meaning in a text. Thus, in order to use picturebooks as multimodal texts in English language learning and teaching, it is basically required to understand what multimodal texts are, what multimodal literacy means, and explore ways to apply in English lesson plans. To fulfill this purpose, this paper explores multiple modes represented in multimodal picturebooks to create meaning, including typesetting, interactive narration, multiple points-of-view and image (Hassett & Curwood, 2009; Sipe, 2001); in addition, it explores what multimodal literacy represents in English education using storybooks. Meanwhile, in order for educators to make systematic use of illustration in English language teaching, the paper looks into the meaning of visual literacy and questioning strategies used to foster students' visual literacy. Lastly, the author suggests a model of multimodal literacy and an English writing instruction model in which the model of multimodal literacy is applied into the existing framework of English instruction using picturebooks. This paper has significance in that it can serve as a guide into using multimodal story picturebooks for English language learning and teaching in a more professional, systematic way.
