Abstract
The information explosion, which is caused by the rapid development of IT technologies and enables us to access an infinite number of global knowledge sources, triggers our awareness on the importance of literacy skills. Today's literacy education focuses on building skills not only to comprehend text properly but to evaluate it critically. In this regard, the recent trends emphasizing multiliteracy skills fit our needs in preparing students for meeting challenges in the digital era. However, the multiliteracy issue has not been adequately dealt with in the context of teaching English as a foreign language in the elementary school. In response to such a scant research base, this study aims to propose an instruction and learning model to reflect the key elements of multiliteracy, including interaction, critical literacy, context-based learning, and digital literacy, for EFL elementary classes. For the purpose, the elements of the English digital textbook prototypes were analyzed and identified regarding how the elements can help students develop their multiliteracy skills. The instruction framework is based on the multiliteracy instruction model, suggested by New London Group, and the principles of content-based instruction and interaction. It is hoped through this study that the proposed model can draw more research efforts on the issue and provide the teachers with practical assistance in introducing multiliteracy skills into their classroom.
