Abstract
Using data from the Panel Study on Korean Children, this study analyzes whether grit mediates the association between a supportive school environment and executive function. It also examines whether perceived academic stress moderates grit’s mediation. A total of 2,150 students’ (1,091 male and 1,059 female) responses were analyzed. The school environment was characterized by teacher support/fostering communication, peer support/a pleasant class environment, and rules/regulations. Grit was defined as consistency of interest and perseverance of effort, whereas executive function was defined as planning/organization, behavioral control, emotional control, and attention concentration. Preliminary analysis was performed through descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The moderated mediational impact was validated using a three-step integrated regression model, and the significance of the conditional indirect effect was established using the bootstrapping method. The study's findings revealed that first, a supportive school environment predicted grit and executive function and subsequently, grit predicted executive function. Second, grit demonstrated a statistically significant positive mediating effect, and this effect was moderated by academic stress. Third, the lower the academic stress, the stronger the indirect effect, and the conditional indirect effect indicated by a specific value was statistically significant only when it was the mean or one standard deviation below the mean. This suggests that, while the school atmosphere is helpful and greater grit has a good influence on executive function, it is difficult to predict this result under heavy academic stress. This study looked at the influence of individual characteristics like grit as well as contextual factors like teacher and peer support, and upper elementary school pupils must learn how to manage academic stress to develop adaptive executive functions.
