Abstract
This study investigated how changes in executive functioning duringchildhood appear over time, and their different types were identifiedaccording to developmental trajectories. In addition, this study examines howsocial competence predicts these development and how grit (i.e. consistencyof interest, perseverance of effort) differs according to development. Datafrom the 7th to 13th Panel Study on Korean Children were extracted andanalyzed using latent class growth modeling. The results showed that thechange in executive functioning from 1st to 4th graders in elementary schoolfollowed a quadratic model, and three qualitatively different developmentalpatterns emerged: the high-maintaining group, the increasing after fallinggroup, and the decreasing after rising group. Generally, the higher the socialcompetence level in preschool, the higher the probability of being in thehigh-maintaining and increasing groups. Finally, the high-maintaining andincreasing-after-groups exhibited higher grit levels during the 5th grade thanthe decreasing-after-rising group. This study demonstrated that a child'ssocial competence directly improves executive function and that improvedexecutive function is associated with increased grit.
