한스 콘과 피터 슈가의 관점을 통해 본 민족주의 이론에 따르자면, 정치적 민족주의 성향이 강한 서유럽과 달리, 동유럽은 문화적 민족주의 특징을 지니고 있다. 이중 종교와 문화의 모자이크로 불리는 유고슬라비아 지역은 종교와 언어 등 문화적 요소에 의해 ‘우리’와 ‘그들’을 나누어 온 대표적인 문화적 민족주의 지역이다. 하지만, 시대적 상황에 따라 유고슬라비아내 민족들은 자 민족 생존과 이해를 극대화하기 위해 노력해 왔으며, 때로는 문화적 민족주의 특징들을 감추기도 하고, 심지어 이를 정치적 민족주의로 포장하고자 노력하기도 했다. 특히, 이러한 양상들은 급격한 사회 변화와 국제 역학 구도 변화가 진행되던 양차 세계대전 사이에 보다 분명하게 드러나게 된다. 앞서의 연구 배경을 바탕으로, 본 논문의 제 2장에서는 유고슬라비아내 민족 갈등의 배경을 ‘정치적 민족주의’와 ‘문화적 민족주의’ 간의 이해 충돌이라는 측면에서 분석하고, 이에 대한 특징들과 논의를 전개하고자 한다. 제 3장에서는 ‘세르비아-크로아티아-슬로베니아 왕국’하에서 왕국 성립을 바라보는 유고슬라비아내 민족들 간의 시각차와 그 갈등 양상을 ‘대(大)세르비아주의 완성’과 ‘평등한 공동체 국가 건설’로 해석하고, 이를 문화적 민족주의 대(對) 정치적 민족주의 간의 갈등으로 분석해보고자 한다. 반면, 제 4장에서는 1929년 경제 대공황 등 국제 정치적 상황 변화에 따라 수립된 ‘유고슬라비아 왕국’ 하에서 세르비아 중심의 유고슬라비아 왕국에 대한 충성 등 ‘정치적 민족의식’을 유도하고자 했던 세르비아와, 이에 반발하여 독립 민족 국가를 수립하고자 했던 크로아티아의 문화적 민족주의 확산 의지를 비교하고자 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the Yugoslavia between the World Wars with a special focus on the conflicts between Political and Cultural Nationalism. Nationalism, which began to spread to the Central and the Balkan Europe from the Western Europe after the 19C, is changed differently from the Western Europe according to the situation and the circumstances of the nations in this area. According to the perspective of Hans Kohn and Peter Sugar on the Nationalism, unlike the Western Europe has a strong tendency of Political Nationalism, the Eastern Europe has the characteristics of Cultural Nationalism. Among the nations of Eastern Europe, the nations in Yugoslavia area, as that called the mosaic of religion and culture, have the major characteristics of Cultural Nationalism. However, according to the contemporary situation, the nations in Yugoslavia have been trying to survive and profit, and they sometimes cover their strong will for national interest and features of Cultural Nationalism, and even they tried to package it as a political nationalism. In particular, these aspects are more clearly revealed during the World Wars which were in progress rapid changes in the international mechanic and interest sphere of the Powers. On the basis of this research background, in this paper, I would like to analyze the various aspects and features of nationalism in the Yugoslavia between the World Wars.
