Abstract
Since nationalism in the modern sense of the 19th century entered croatia with pan-slavism, Croatia has lived in a nationalist era to this day. Nationalism is interpreted in various ways in its concept and way of development. The croatian nationalist movement can be largely divided into two types of nationalism. The first tried to find the political identity ‘natio croatica’ within the south slavic ethnic identity and the second tried to build a self-governing state for themselves and form a national identity based on the state. The start of nationalism in croatia was the first type of nationalism and sought to bring down the political legitimacy of the croatian nation from the elements of history, culture or ethnicity. The aim was to create a South Slavic nation, symbolized by the name of "Illyria," and to build a nation-state for them. The second type is Ustaše, considered the most violent nationalism in the croatian history, and the nationalism of the "Independent State of Croatia(Nezavista Država Hrvatska: NDH)", which is its practical form. The ideals pursued by these two types of nationalism have all ended in failure in real politics. But these two types of nationalism have since emerged repeatedly in Croatian history, depending on social and political situations. This study organizes the universal concepts of ethnicity and nationalism and analyzes the concepts and theories generated by the two nationalism to evaluate the Croatian nationalism of today.
