Abstract

This article, inspired by Gert Biesta’s “world-centered education,” examines the meaning of education through an exploration of the concept of “world.” This paper will first discuss Michael Oakeshott’s meaning of “world,” which places the world as the source of educational content and the object of cognition and its limitations. It then explores the meaning of “world” beyond an object of cognition and “interpretive human–world relations,” focusing on Biesta’s discussion of Hannah Arendt and Jean-Luc Marion. From here, the paper moves to an exploration of the meaning of “world” for education. As this article argues, the meaning of “world” as the most general subject matter places it as a resource that can realize the purpose of education, but this has the limitation of overlooking the existential dimension of education. Arendt and Biesta acknowledge the reality of the world and regard it as the foundation of human existence. Arendt’s concept of the “world” suggests the importance of the public world and that education should be conducted in the contradiction between a love for the world and the natality of children. In addition to expanding the meaning of “world,” Biesta explores the possibility of a human world relationship that is different from the interpretive worldview he criticized. He argues that education is not limited to the activity of learners understanding and interpreting the world as an object, but that it includes teaching students to pay attention to the world. Education is thus an existential event in which students find their place in the world.
