Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the change and competition of cultural identities of Okinawan people through Shuri-jo as a most important cultural representation of Okinawa. Okinawan people have been under the control of external power from the establishment of the Ryukyu Kingdom. In this process, the cultural identity of Okinawan people has been unstable. Particularly, after the fall of the Ryukyu Kingdom, Okinawan people experienced the competition of a cultural identity between the Ryukyu Kingdom and Japan. Also during the period of the Ryukyu Government (1945~1972), the Okinawan people experienced competition and a confusion of the cultural identity among the Ryukyu Kingdom, Japan and the United States. After 1972, this competition and confusion of cultural identity has continued. The competition and change of its cultural identity in Okinawa is manifested in Shuri-jo. This external power dominated Okinawa has initiated to restore Shuri-jo in the aim of making the Okinawan identity as a dominated region. The history of Shuri-jo restoration can be understood in this view point. However, the Okinawan people not only accept identity making of external power, but also make their own cultural identity as Ryukyu by providing meaning as the most important cultural representation of Ryukyu Kingdom to a restored Shuri-jo. As a result, Shuri-jo has been competing and/or negotiating the field of cultural identity.
