Abstract

Effective communication between students with and without disabilities in inclusive classrooms should be based on empathy, which requires empathy education grounded in the curriculum. This study aimed to analyze elements of disability empathy education activities in the 2022 revised Korean language textbooks for grades 1-4 in elementary school. A two-step analysis of 24 textbooks across four grades examined disability-related content and empathy elements, which were then integrated to identify disability empathy education activities. The analysis yielded three main findings. First, a total of 166 disability-related content elements were identified, with illustrations representing the largest proportion. Compared to the past, students with disabilities in these illustrations were portrayed as more active and autonomous, although students using wheelchairs were relatively overrepresented. Disability-related content elements were consistently presented in ‘subunits’ and ‘skill building’ sections, appearing most frequently in the listening and speaking domains. Second, based on the disability-related content, 10 disability empathy education activity elements were identified in the textbooks for grades 1, 3, and 4. Third, the analysis of connections among these activity elements across grades 1-4 revealed that each activity was independently structured rather than interlinked. By clarifying disability empathy education activity elements through an analysis encompassing both disability and empathy, this study provides implications for planning and implementing empathy education using Korean language textbooks in inclusive classrooms. The study suggests that curriculum-based disability empathy education should include practical and real-life learning experiences beyond mere knowledge acquisition.
