Abstract
This study used a LASSO regression model to analyze key factors influencing students’ and parents’ positive perceptions of teachers’ teaching methods, guidance, and evaluation practices. Data from the 2024 Gyeonggi Province School Members’ Human Rights Survey were used. Three dependent variables were identified: “I respect teachers’ teaching content and methods,” “I respect teachers’ guidance and teaching,” and “I trust teachers’ evaluation results.” The results confirmed that teachers’ respect for students was the strongest predictor of positive perceptions and respect for three classroom activities across all analysis subjects, including elementary, middle, and high school students, and their parents. For students, enjoyment of class time and overall satisfaction with school life were common factors that increased respect for teachers. Specifically, for middle and high school students, negative experiences such as corporal punishment and verbal abuse at school were strong negative predictors of decreased respect for teachers. Factors related to students’ human rights, such as participation in students’ self-government activities and the appropriateness of disciplinary procedures, emerged as significant predictors. For parents, perceptions of teachers’ competence and dedication, satisfaction with the school and classroom climate, and opportunities to participate in school decision-making were key factors in enhancing positive perceptions. These results reveal that forming positive relationships based on mutual respect is essential for teachers’ professional role performance, contributing to the quality of education and student growth. Finally, implications for educational policy are presented based on the findings.
