Abstract
The school space is not just a physical structure but a holistic social space composed of students and teachers, institutions and practices, and memories and emotions, and it is a place where students’ feelings, memories, and spatial experiences accumulate through interaction with physical buildings. Therefore, through the “school space improvement project” led by the elementary school self-governing council, this study explored how students perceive school space, how a sense of place is formed, and how it changes over time. The results are as follows. First, students grew up as active subjects who recognize and solve problems rather than as passive beings consuming space through space improvement projects. Second, before and after the project, students’ perceptions of school space improved, and students’ sense of place was confirmed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Third, as students’ autonomy, autonomy capabilities, responsibility, and participation consciousness were cultivated, they grew into active space practitioners. Fourth, this study confirmed that the school space cannot be a simple physical “space” but a living “place” in which student-led practice and change occur. The significance and implications of this study are as follows. First, the practical possibility of democratic citizenship education through space was specifically presented by connecting the social composition of the school space, the formation of a sense of place, and student autonomy activities. Second, by empirically analyzing the development of a sense of place among elementary school students, the process of growing elementary school students into active space actors from a children’s geography perspective was examined. Third, by presenting a model for a space improvement program based on student autonomy applicable in the school field, practical implications for educational practice were provided.
