Abstract

Kim Kyu-dong who had began his literary career as a post-war modernist, had become literary coterie ‘Hu-ban-gi’, and had written poems of criticizing civilization, experienced ontological transition after 1970s. This process was formed and expanded with the finding of national realities related to his experience of division of south and north. From then on, Kim Kyu-dong’s poems came into the border of national literature by overcoming sentimental and esoteric features and he intensely participated the democratic movement of literary circles with Paek Nakchung, Ko Eun, Park Taesoon and etc. During this period, his poems described his tragic experience of national division, his criticism on various aspects of Korean society and tragic lyricism with clean sadness. The characteristics of later poems by Kim is that he depended deeply on simple and clear lyricism, chose the voice sinking into his inner world not the voice of high cry. and used a language of testimony as a generation who had experienced liberation, war and division rather than a language of metaphor and symbol. With his process of change in poems, this could be recorded as a significant incident in the history of Korean literature. In conclusion, later poems of Kim Kyu-dong could be considered as an example of showing thick memory and testimony of an elder in the process of change in Korean society.
