초록
This research aims to study the method of modern Arabic lexicography from 19c until the early 20th century focused on the ordinary alphabetical arrangement. The great interest in codification to make Arabic language a capable and uniform instrument of communication arose first in relation to Islam. And for the purpose of preserving the textual integrity and correct pronunciation of the Arabic language in the Qur’ān, the first linguistic studies were started and they were systematized by Al-khalīl Bn 'Ahmad who was considered as one of the greatest Arab linguists. Al-khalīl had laid the foundations for the compilations of the Arabic dictionaries and it was characterized by the permutational or anagrammatical arrangement. For succeeding to Al- khalil's method, Al- Azhari compiled his dictionary by the permutational or anagrammatical arrangement. In the modern age from the end of 19th century until the early of 20th century, some dictionaries were compiled by the modern alphabetical arrangement order. The representative of this step is Butrūs Al-bustāni's 『Muḥīṭ Al-muḥīṭ』, Luyis Al-maʻrūf's 『Al-munjid』, and 『Al-muʻjam Al-wasīṭ』compiled by the academy of Arabic language in Cairo. These dictionaries drove the remarkable development of Arabic lexicography and led to the compilation of most fruitful modern Arabic lexicographical works. And they are considered as the most famous Arabic dictionaries until nowadays.
