Abstract
This paper focuses on the idea that SF is not a genre that predicts the future but rather one that one that observes and portrays contemporary life. It examines how thought experiments in feminist SF generate moments of rupture and critical distance that allow for a defamiliarized view of the present world. Through this lens, the study traces the posthuman project that emerges from this process —namely, becoming-otherwise-human and the possibility of other worlds. Kim Bo-young’s How Similar Are We is a feminist SF work that metaphorically reconstructs the contemporary issue of security power, which has operated in disaster situations, within the extreme environment of a future space catastrophe. The narrative technique of "defamiliarization," which has emerged as a significant narrative form, disrupts the "spontaneous consciousness" that originates from a dominant social position, thereby facilitating a transition into a new realm of perception. This process includes making visible and perceptible the structures of gender oppression, which have become so normalized in everyday life that they appears almost "erased" and invisible. In How Similar Are We, this defamiliarization overlaps with the process of revealing how security power operates in a space disaster. The critical and decisive transformation that How Similar Are We aims to achieve through its thought experiment on gender consciousness is closely tied to the space disaster that serves as the novel’s backdrop. The survival crisis faced by the inhabitants of Titan and the conflicts among the human crew members regarding their rescue vividly illustrate how contemporary security power functions as a neglectful system, failing to guarantee the survival of those in disaster situations. The process of seeking alternatives beyond the unequal structures of risk positions involves a posthuman project that dislocates anthropocentrism. The female captain, Lee Jin-seo, and the female AI, HUN, carry out the rescue of Titan’s disaster survivors through interspecies and cross-boundary solidarity. Based on shared vulnerability, they expand compassion and ethical responsibility, moving toward the possibility of coexistence proposed by posthumanism. In the final scene, the affect of compassion is no longer confined to the human body but exerts its force through non-human materials, realizing the possibility of rescue. The narrative metaphorically suggests the possibility of other worlds, evoking our yearning for a horizon of hope that is not yet here but inevitably approaching.
