Abstract
Recently Chinese intellectual Sun Ge(孙歌, 1955~) raised the issue of Asia's diversity and openness in In Search of Asia(2019). The starting point of his awareness of the problem is that Asia has not been able to establish the logic of self-sufficiency due to the continuous process of colonization after Western modernization. Sun Ge refused to interpret Asia's own diversity within the framework of the existing Western centric logic of abstract universality and modernization theory. In response, Sun Ge breaks away from the existing Western-centric metaphysical universality principle and attempts to recover the Asian principle by seeking new universality. To this end, he introduces the concepts of insufficient universality and open particularity and tries to establish them anew through metaphysical reasoning methods. The purpose of this study is to identify ‘search for Asian principles’ by analyzing these attempts by Sun Ge. In Chapter 2 of the text, we looked at the hierarchy of the East in the stage of historical development based on the theory of universals, which is the premise of Hegel's philosophy of history that systematized Western modernization theory, and then also looked at the Asian production mode advocated by Marx-Engels. In Chapter 3, we looked at the critical awareness of post Western universal theories that East Asian intellectuals such as Yoshimi Takeuchi, Naoki Sakai, and Wang Hui have accumulated. In Chapter 4, after examining his Post Eurocentrism thought through some of the examples he gives, I examine his proposed metaphysical reasoning around insufficient universals and open particularities, suggesting differences with Hegel's concepts of the universal and the individual. In the final chapter 5, we examine whether the new logic of universality advocated by Sun Ge is indeed a logic with theoretical clarity and external applicability. Like The New Cold War Theory, Neoliberalism, Neocolonialism.
