Abstract

Po-te-hi(布袋戲), a traditional form of glove puppetry in Taiwan, has exhibited a unique trajectory of development by preserving its traditional form while actively adapting to changing environments, even as traditional performing arts across East Asia have generally declined. This study examines how Po-te-hi has transformed itself across various political contexts—ranging from Japanese colonial rule and Kuomintang martial law to Taiwan’s democratization. It further investigates how the art form successfully transitioned into a cultural industry through media evolution spanning television, video, and digital platforms. Despite experiencing oppression under Japanese assimilation policies and later the Kuomintang’s anti-communist ideology, Po-te-hi achieved artistic and technological innovation through strategies such as enlarging puppet sizes, incorporating Japanese samurai drama elements, shifting performances indoors, and refining stage lighting techniques. In the post-democratization era, it not only received political and administrative support as a cultural asset unique to Taiwan but also diversified its business through blockbuster-style productions and global market expansion. Notably, the persistent use of the Taiwanese language continues to underscore its cultural identity. By analyzing the internal factors that enabled Po-te-hi to maintain sustainability under external pressures—such as political oppression, changes in media environments, and industrial logic—this study aims to offer insights into the modern survival of traditional performing arts. The findings may also inform revitalization strategies for traditional Korean performing arts, which face increasing marginalization today.
