Abstract
This study focuses on the period surrounding Park Ji-ga’s first yeonhaeng (diplomatic mission to Qing China), analyzing how he strategically utilized his interactions with Qing literati. While previous research has tended to interpret Park’s Bukhak (Northern Learning) thought primarily as an expression of admiration for, or acceptance of, Chinese civilization, this paper views it instead as part of a more proactive and autonomous cultural strategy. Before his journey, Park Ji-ga endured a prolonged period of marginalization within the rigid institutional structures of Joseon society. In response to these structural limitations, he devised reformist policies (gyeongsechaek) rooted in literary self-conception and the pursuit of systemic change. Even prior to the mission, he sought to build a network with Qing literati such as Gwak Jiphwan, Yi Jo-won, and Pan Tingyun. Through the first yeonhaeng, he began to actively implement his strategic plan for cultural exchange. This study particularly examines Park’s assertive posture during this process—specifically, his use of deferential language and expressions that may appear as excessive Sinophilia (Junggukbyeok)—as calculated choices aimed at securing recognition, information, and resources from his Chinese counterparts. Moreover, during the mission, he systematically observed and documented various aspects of Qing institutions, customs, and technologies, and upon his return, he completed the Bukhakui, a compilation of his reformist insights. However, Bukhakui failed to gain acceptance in Joseon’s anti-Qing intellectual climate. Even so, Park continued to explore the practical application of his Bukhak-based reform proposals while working as an official book examiner (geomseogwan). Through this trajectory, the paper argues that Park Ji-ga’s Bukhak was not a matter of simple imitation or cultural submission, but rather a strategic and self-directed practice, through which he sought to realize his reformist vision by engaging with the cultural Other.
