Abstract

This article explores the historical changes of glove puppetry (zhangzhongxi or budaixi) in Taiwan to analyze its characteristics within the sociocultural context. Transmitted from Fuzhou to Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty, glove puppetry was initially performed in religious settings as part of a religious ritual. During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, puppetry performances were influenced by Japanese colonial control, so puppets were forced to wear Japanese costumes and to use the Japanese language. After the Kuomintang’s takeover in 1945, the religious aspect of glove puppetry declined, and the focus shifted to entertainment for profit. In this process, Jinguangxi, which utilized various visual, sound, and lighting effects, gained widespread popularity. In recent years, Pili International Multimedia’s martial arts series has become the most popular form of glove puppetry in Taiwan, renowned for their spectacular visual effects and cinematic editing techniques, leading to a large fanbase. Puppetry fans participate in various activities such as attending concerts and showcases, purchasing figurines and tie-ins, and even cosplaying. This fan culture reflects the influence of popular culture from Japan, Korea, and beyond. Since glove puppetry, as a traditional artistic performance in Taiwan, uses the Taiwanese language (Taiyu) and has a close relationship with Taiwanese folk religion, it is considered a symbol of Taiwanese identity and is regarded as a representative of ‘Made in Taiwan.’ However, it is important to note that contemporary glove puppetry in Taiwan is not the same as it was in the past; rather, it lies across between the sacred and the profane and also embodies hybridity of traditional and global influences. It is crucial to view Taiwan’s glove puppetry as a complex mix of traditional cultural values and consumer capitalism, blending Taiwan’s traditional culture with contemporary global popular culture.
