Abstract

Enhancing the Nang scholar and rejecting Confucian scholar is one characteristic of Shin Chae-ho’s nationalistic view of history. He defends Nang scholar passionately regarding Confucianism as submissive reactionary ideology. In short, Shin seeks solution to overcome Korean national crisis by rejecting Confucianism arguing that Confucianism is the main culprit which has corrupted modern history of Korea. His argument comes from his view of history; struggle of self and non-self. He considers the law of the jungle as nature of history and tries to overcome Korean national crisis through the logic of self-progress. If the law of the jungle is the nature of history, self-progress is the only truth which must be sought. Therefore Shin interprets and evaluates Korean history from the perspective of self-progress theory. That is why he values ancient history of territorial expansion and harshly denigrates modern history of peaceful coexistence. His view of history and methodology of independent movement that ‘the end justifies the means’ have serious problems with morality. Therefore although we still succeed to his patriotism, we need to overcome his perception of history.
