Abstract
This paper analyzes the antagonistic relationship between the film <A Barren Woman> and developmental nationalism of the regime at the time by considering the common historical context between a novel A Barren Woman and the film. In the 1960s, the Park Chung-hee regime organized the middle-class family as an essential unit for the developmental nationalism order. The middle-class family model was reproduced through melodrama films. In particular, melodrama films that emerged in the mid-to-late 1960s had the characteristic of creating cracks in the middle-class family discourse based on romantic love-sex-marriage under the oppressive state ideology. In this context, the film <A Barren Woman> partially modified the original work and had an antagonistic relationship with the developmental nationalism system at the time. The relationship between the two male characters in the film and Jiwon exposes that the romantic love-sex-marriage ideology mobilized for developmental nationalism was nothing more than an illusion. In addition, the relationship between Mira and Jiwon, which changed significantly when the novel was made into a film, cracks the heterosexual norms that the romantic love-sex-marriage ideology presupposes. So far Jiwon exposes the oppressive aspect of the romantic love-sex-marriage ideology and refuses to reproduce, Jiwon’s final voice over narration seals the film with a reactionary attitude. In this respect, we can consider that <A Barren Woman> could not exist as a completely counter-discursive text.
