Abstract
Sectarian conflict is frequently mentioned in analyzing the regional hegemony competition between Saudi Arabia and Iran. However, empirical examination of the reality and function of the Sunni-Shiite conflict discourse is rare. Thus, this study aims to demonstrate how much sectarian conflict has been utilized politically especially in terms of two ideological functions: legitimmation and otherization. To test this hypothesis, this study used two words 'Sunni' and 'Shia' as search terms on the Al Jazeera English website from 2003, when the Iraq War broke out, to 2023. The collected articles were analyzed using an R-based data mining package. In this process, Co-occurrence analysis, Topic Modelling analysis based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Emotion Modelling analysis were conducted to identify the key issues, causes, and trends surrounding the sectarian conflicts.
