Abstract
This paper compares Son Byeong-hui's theory of the three stages of the mind, body, and spirit, and Dangun's theory of the three stages of the mind, body, and spirit, and their theory of cultivation. Son Byeong-hui's theory of the three stages of the mind, body, and spirit holds that the mind is the substance and the spirit is the medium connecting the mind and spirit. A theory of cultivation is necessary because the body engages in evil. Evil arises from the mind. The mind is composed of the three stages of enlightenment: the unawakened, the unawakened, and the awakened. It arises from the unawakened's comparative function and is formed from the awakened. Therefore, we must cultivate the mind, utilizing the function of the mind, to transform the mind. Son Byeong-hui began with the traditional Donghak method of chanting a 21-character mantra, but he also developed a new method: focusing on a single theme and eliminating distracting thoughts. This theme is, "What kind of self exists within me that teaches and directs me to bow, mind, and compassion?" Through this immersion, the comparing function, arising from the unawakened, loses its power, and I follow the dictates of the awakened, thus eliminating evil. Dangun's theory of the three stages of mind, energy, and spirit holds that mind is the essence, and energy serves as a mediator connecting mind and spirit. The background of evil is that the mind follows its nature, giving rise to good and evil. While no specific explanation is provided, it is clear that it arises from the mind's comparative function. Evil stems from the conflict between the three true and three false elements, creating three distinct paths: feeling, breath, and contact. Feeling, breath, and contact each produce six, for a total of eighteen. If left unchecked, this leads to the suffering of aging, illness, and death. However, a bright person ceases feeling, evens breathing, and cultivates self-discipline by refraining from contact, thereby halting evil and advancing toward true selfhood. The unification of these three is achieved through even breathing. Even breathing allows one to avoid the six negative feelings that arise, protecting oneself. Even breathing also prevents contact, which should be avoided.
