Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the content and patterns of stories of the ruined rich instead of those of becoming rich, which have been studied extensively, and further the thinking of those who enjoyed stories in the stories. The stories that have a plot of the ruined rich as a major narrative context in the narrative structure can be categorized into three: first, the rich go to ruin for not treating their house guests properly; second, the rich go to ruin for not serving the guardian deity of a big snake properly; and finally, the rich go to ruin for not choosing a tomb spot right. They clearly show that the narrative structure of the stories of the ruined rich is in contrast with the internal logic and thinking system of those who enjoyed stories in the stories of becoming rich. Those who enjoyed stories found the causes of the ruined rich in negligence of social responsibility as the rich, lack of care for the ancestors, and mistreatment of trifles represented by a guardian deity apparently manifested in the events of hosting and entertaining guests. Such problematic consciousness is supplemented by the narrative of stories of becoming rich that have an opposite causal structure to the stories of the ruined rich. After all, the stories telling about how the rich go to ruin show what not to do in order to remain rich. The narratives were reviewed according to the layers of the content. The results indicate that one can become rich only by making efforts to sincerely treat and serve all trifles, people, and invisible spirits from a guardian deity and guest to an ancestor. They paradoxically emphasize that only those who have the capacity can become rich. In the end, there is a positive perception of 'wealth' in negative stories about the rich going to ruin.
