Abstract

This paper analyzes Choi Han-gi's view on Yin-Yang(陰陽) and Wuxing(五行). The author confirmed that Choi Han-gi's perspective on Yin-Yang and the Wuxing is somewhat inconsistent. Of course, Choi Han-gi was a philosopher of Chi(氣), who even named his own scholarship Chi-hak (氣學, study of Chi. Thus, he can be considered a scholar distinct from traditional Neo-Confucianism(性理學) or the philosophy of Li(理學). Nevertheless, Choi Han-gi also possessed academic tendencies that cannot be understood as completely abandoning the Confucian tradition. Under the influence of Western science, Choi Han-gi showed many negative perceptions regarding practices like divination(術數), Geomancy(風水), and the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches(干支). However, it was difficult to find writings that could be seen as a fundamental critique of Yin-Yang theory itself. He did explain the myriad phenomena of the universe through the unitary activity and transformation(運化) of Chi, and in some respects, his empirical tendencies based on the Western concept of matter can be distinguished from the traditional Chi. The criticism regarding the Five Phases is not much different. Rather than fundamentally criticizing the Five Phases system, it is believed that he primarily criticized the principle of Mutual Generation (相生) and Mutual Overcoming(相剋) within the Five Phases, and the forced and strained interpretations(牽強附會) of these principles in practices like Myeongri(命理) and traditional medicine. Regarding the relationship between Choi Han-gi's Gi-hak and Yin-Yang and the Five Phases, it was confirmed that although he did not actively utilize Yin-Yang and the Five Phases, the principles of Yin-Yang and the Wuxing are embedded in the core of his Chi-hak(氣學). This demonstrates that his philosophy is not significantly different from traditional Chi philosophy, which sought to clarify the principles of the universe's and life's creation and change through Yin-Yang and the Five Phases. Furthermore, it shows that Activity(活), Movement(動), Circulation(運), and Transformation(化) function organically, like the attributes and relationships of the Wuxing, to drive change. Ultimately, it can be said that Choi Han-gi's Chi-hak did not fully break away from the traditional notions of Gi and Yin-Yang and the Wuxing. Additionally, there are aspects of Chi-hak that can be understood from the perspective of Western science. Choi Han-gi's Chi-hak possesses this complex character, which is clearly evident in his viewpoint on Yin-Yang and the Wuxing.
