초록
This study aims to investigate the effects of dictogloss activities on English writing abilities of middle school students in different proficiency levels and in groups of different small group formation types. Dictogloss refers to a set of classroom activities in which students reconstruct a text after listening and note-taking. One hundred and nine middle school students divided into two high-level and two mid-level groups participated in the experiment for 10 weeks. One group in each level got engaged in mixed-level grouping and the other homogeneous grouping. Pre-and-post tests were administered on several areas of students’ writing abilities. The results showed improvement in all four groups. Both proficiency groups increased in all areas in the rubric (content, organization, vocabulary, language, and mechanics) except for the high groups' language category scores. The effects of dictogloss activities varied across grouping methods. While the homogeneous grouping showed greater improvements in content and organization areas in the high levels, the mixed grouping increased more significantly in the content area in the mid levels. The results indicate that dictogloss can be an effective teaching technique for middle school students' writing across proficiency levels, and grouping methods may make a particular difference in higher order concerns in writing.
