The purpose of this study is to introduce Langacker(1987, 1991, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2009)’s grounding theory including ‘type, instance, instantiation, grounding, grounding elements’. Based on this theory, We analysed nominal grounding in Mandarin Chinese. In Mandarin Chinese, there are several components that function grounding elements such as demonstrative pronouns, determiners as the reference points(human, time, space and event etc.), but modifiers only represent type concept because they had characteristics implicating denotation, so they are classed as nouns.
Abstract
