초록

The aim of the present study is to analyze two postmodifiers in the English-language media, English relative clauses and English present participle clauses, to identify syntactic and semantic properties of English relative clause constructions. The corpus analyses show that the noun head that English relative clauses and English present participle clauses modify appear more frequently in the subject positions than in the objects of transitive verbs in the matrix sentences. It is also found that English relative clauses contain MENTAL VERB TYPE whereas English present participle clauses contain COMMUNICATION VERB TYPE. Moreover, tense, aspect and modality are more frequently shown in the WHO-subject relative clauses than in the THAT-subject relative clauses. This paper claims that corpus-based analysis of grammatical structures enables us to identify linguistic properties in the discourses.
