National Curriculum in the Kim Jong-Un Era: General Guidelines and English Education at the Middle School Level in North Korea

North Koreaeen a recognized need for acshould be examined to illuminate North Korea’s new educational policy under Kim Jong-Un. However, several major issues need to be resolved, particularly regarding the acquisition of North Korea’s latest National Curriculum. This paper describes three studies exploring the development of North Koreae North Koreacs and res. They address English language instruction, the 2013 middle school National Curriculum (General Guidelines), and the 2013 middle school English National Curriculum. North Korea’s 2013 National Curriculum introduces considerable changes from previous standards, particularly in the area of English. Very detailed achievement targets have been set for listening, speaking, reading, and writing at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. In addition, English teachers are required to test according to very specific guidelines. This paper will be of interest to academics and to researchers who are interested in North Korea’s National Curriculum.
