초록
This paper is about the plurality makers of nouns in Korean, Chinese and Japanese. It is common in Indo-European languages to encode plurality with a suffix, and it is a major grammar category. But KCJ have in common that plurality markers are optional rather than obligatory, because bare nouns tend to mean plural rather than singular in KCJ. But it does not correspond to mark plural suffixes between the three languages. In this paper, we analyzed the plural suffixes of the three languages in translated text from an original text in English. The results are as follows: Chinese has the largest number of noun suffixes, followed by Korean and then Japanese. But it is Korean that has the largest number when restricted to common nouns. Korean most closely reflects English plurality, while Chinese and Japanese use bare nouns or numerals. It is thought that Chinese and Japanese plural makers work as a reference or empathy maker.
Abstract
This paper is about the plurality makers of nouns in Korean, Chinese and Japanese. It is common in Indo-European languages to encode plurality with a suffix, and it is a major grammar category. But it does not correspond to mark plural suffixes between the three languages. In this paper, we analyzed the plural suffixes of the three languages in translated text from an original text in English.
