초록
This paper investigates the translation phenomenon of English plural noun phrases into Korean to provide the semantics of the so-called Korean plural marker -tul. It is known that in Korean, not only -tul-nouns but also unmarked bare nouns can express plurality. This means that when an English plural noun is translated into Korean, it may be put in either a -tul-form or an unmarked form. The question is whether this choice is done arbitrarily or under a certain rule. Using three English-Korean parallel corpora from the 21st Century Sejong Project, this paper analyzes the English plural NPs based on the four different types of English NPs―definite, quantifier, numeral, and bare plural NPs. The paper suggests that while the unmarked forms relates to the kind/generic meaning and collectivity, the morpheme -tul expresses two distinct meanings, denoting plural entities like the English plural form on one hand and distributivity on the other. Furthermore, the meaning of plurality operates strictly under three concepts such as animacy, definiteness, and specificity.
