공무원 영어시험의 코퍼스 기반 어휘 난이도 분석

초록

This study investigated the difficulty level of vocabulary on the Civil Service English Exam (CSEE) conducted between the years 2012 to 2017 through corpus analysis. The CSEE was categorized into six groups depending on its employment levels of Grade 7 (G7) and Grade 9 (G9), and government levels of national, local, and Seoul. The analysis tools utilized in this research included the following: 1) WordSmith Tools 6.0; 2) Range program; and 3) Readability calculator. One notable finding was that the Standardized Type/Token Ratio (STTR) of G9 for Seoul was the highest among the six CSEEs at 53.26, and the STTR of G9 (51.24) was higher than that of G7 (49.30). The result that the difficulty level of G9 vocabulary was higher than that of G7 vocabulary was verified by the low level of General Service List (GSL) & Academic Word List (AWL) range and the result of readability analysis. However, this cannot be considered reasonable, considering the fact that the employment level of G7 is higher than that of G9. The high difficulty level of vocabulary for G9 seemed to be affected by the number of applicants, which was more than five times that of G7. In order to increase the quality of the CSEE, this study suggests that the test developers should put forth more effort to evaluate applicants’ language competence at both the organizational and pragmatic levels in a more comprehensive way, rather than increasing the difficulty level of vocabulary.
