초록

An interjection is an important linguistic element that intuitively conveys the speaker's emotion and tone. As the most abbreviated form of an utterance, its meaning and intensity can vary depending on the speaker and context. This study analyzes how the interjection "ah" in "Squid Game" is translated in the general English subtitles and English SDH(Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing) and compares the translation strategies used in each subtitle type. The analysis shows that interjection marks are often omitted in the general English subtitles, while in English SDH they are replaced by non-verbal cues such as intonation, tone, and intensity, or by adding half-square symbols and vocative expressions. This reflects the different nature of the two types of subtitles and suggests that English SDH replaces the function of the interjection with other linguistic techniques. Furthermore, the stronger the initial syllable boundary of an utterance, the more the emotion tends to be emphasized, which can be explained by a phenomenon called 'Initial Strengthening.' When Initial Strengthening occurs in the source language, the speaker's emotion tends to be more emphasized, which can be interpreted as a translation strategy that takes into account the intensity of emotion. Further research is expected to objectively demonstrate these translation features through speech experiments, which will enable more precise theoretical analysis.
