Abstract
Based on the paradigm of the myonuclear domain theory, it is considered that a positive relationship exists between myonuclear number and skeletal muscle size. However, a series of recent experiments with advanced microscopy suggest that hypertrophy-induced myonuclei are not lost for a long period under atrophic condition, implying that myouclei that are added to muscle fiber may play an important role in muscle memory mechanism. However, there is still controversy as to whether this new theory should be accepted as a general consensus in the field of exercise science communities. Therefore, the potential and limitation of the theory will be widely discussed in the review. And future research directions as to skeletal muscle memory mechanism will be suggested.
