Abstract

This study examines the institutionalization and publicization of women's sports during the Japanese colonial period from a historical perspective by focusing on the All-Joseon Women's Tennis Tournament (Jeon-Joseon Yeoja Jeonggu Daehoe), which was first held in 1923 under the sponsorship of the Dong-A Ilbo. This tournament marked a shift in the transition of women's physical education from school-based activities to publicly staged competitions. The adoption of Japanese soft tennis rules, along with ceremonial elements such as dress codes, opening ceremonies, and the inclusion of female referees, contributed to its institutional framework. The increasing participation of provincial girls' schools and widespread media coverage have facilitated the nationwide diffusion and social acceptance of women's sports. Furthermore, the evolution of spectator culture and visual presentations has reinforced the tournament’s popular character. The All-Joseon Women's Tennis Tournament functioned as a cultural arena in which female corporeality, citizenship, and gender norms intersected. Thus, it serves as a symbolic case illustrating the process of institutionalizing and legitimizing women’s sports in modern colonial Korea.
