Abstract
This study empirically examines the institutionalization of women’s physical education during the Japanese colonial period, focusing on the 1914, 1927, and 1937 editions of the School Gymnastics Teaching Guidelines (Gakkō Taisō Kyōju Yōmoku). By analyzing the structural changes in three key categories—gymnastics, military drills, and recreational activities —this research reveals how the colonial regime sought to discipline Korean female bodies through hygienic and moral regulations and gradually redefined them as mobilizable entities for wartime services. The 1914 edition emphasized hygiene, modesty, and restraint, constructing women’s bodies in a passive and orderly manner. The 1927 revision further systematized the curriculum by grade level and intensified group discipline and bodily control, reflecting a deepening of internalized regulation. The 1937 version marked a turning point, incorporating martial arts such as kyūdō and naginata into the curriculum, and transforming women’s physical education into a tool of wartime ideology. It promoted the ideal of the loyal, devoted, and morally upright and “mother of the nation” as part of a gendered militarization strategy. Ultimately, the evolution of the School Gymnastics Teaching Guidelines reflects a deepening colonial governance project disguised as educational modernization.
