한국문학 연구와 ‘대동문화연구원’―동아시아학으로의 연구지평 확대와 연구방법론의 창신

Abstract

This paper is for reporting the scholastic achievement of Daedong Institute for Korean Studies at SungKyunKwan University for fifty-year activities. It was focused on the studies on literature. The first thing I have to say about Daedong Institute for Korean Studies is the publishing and accomplishing of Daedong munhwa yongu (The Journal of Eastern Studies) as a important academic journal: with the Journal, the Institute have urged that a comprehensive view covering literature, history and philosophy and an interdisciplinary approach be needed. Accordingly, the horizon of research could have been opened wide to East Asia. And it has been able to make its own studies objectified by the eye of the other beyond a national viewpoint and struggled to look into literature with fresh mind by comparing it with adjoining fields. Daedong Institute for Korean Studies has always had a basic stand to encompass the modern and premodern and continued to suggest new issues related to the modern and premodern and achieved definitely. Daedong Institute for Korean Studies has also posed problems in the methodology: an eurocentric approach and a dichotomy of literature approach between the modern and premodern, and it has tried to find various ways and alternative to cope with the problems. As a corollary, Daedong Institute for Korean Studies has made a valuable contribution to newly-ma king of studies of Korean literature and to establishment of Korean studies and East Asian studies. Another significant accomplishment is to make the data easy-accessed by digitalizing the classics and distributing it to researchers and institutions. From these accomplishments Daedong Institute for Korean Studies could be ex pected to serve a model for academic institutions.
