Abstract

The purpose of this article is to suggest the achievements and prospects of the Academy of East Asian Studies, which was expanded and reorganized from the Daedong Institute for Korean Studies established in 1958. The Academy of East Asian Studies, which opened in 2000, was a research institute to present a model of collaboration and convergence between humanities and social sciences. The integration of education and research, the strategy of combining educational functions with university research institutes, the proposal of academic long-term agendas, and the presentation of practical methodologies in the academic sphere, has drawn much attention from Korean universities and has been subject to benchmarking. As a result of its efforts over the past two decades, twelve Ph.D.s from the Academy of East Asian Studies and the Translating Pre-modern Korean Text in Classical Chinese have got a professor position at university since 2002. Furthermore, while 86 Ph.D.s who participated in a research project have become a professor position at universities or as a researcher at academic institutes. The growth of the Academy of East Asian Studies through the combination of new research and education as a research institute at a university drove the simultaneous growth of Korean humanities studies.
