교과통합의 관점에서 본 ‘통섭’의 의미와 한계

이 논문은 ‘통섭’의 개념이 교과통합에 어떻게 관련되는가를 살펴보기 위한 것이다. 이를 위하여 우선 ‘통섭’의 의미를 ‘정합’, ‘합치’, ‘통일’, ‘통합’ 등의 유사어와 관련하여 분석한 다음, ‘환원적 통섭’과 ‘가법적 통섭’으로 구분하여 검토하였다. 전자는 ‘본유의 통합’에, 후자는 ‘배움의 통합’에 적합한 개념임을 확인하였다. 마음의 계발을 목적으로 하는 교육은 문명의 발달과 맥을 함께 한다. 이 점에서 문명의 발달은 의식고양의 과정이라 할 수 있다. 의식고양의 과정으로서 ‘분화’와 ‘통합’의 의미를 살펴보고, 교과의 특성에 비추어 환원주의의 한계를 논의하였다. 환원주의는 세상을 설명하는 데 요구되는 ‘본유의 통합’이라는 관점을 제공해 준다는 장점에도 불구하고, 다양한 인간 활동의 영역이 존재하며 이들 영역이 환원적 통섭의 대상이 되기 어렵다는 한계를 드러낸다. 희랍의 ‘프락시스’(praxis)와 ‘포이에시스’(poiesis) 영역이나 유학(儒學)의 ‘인설’(仁說)의 경우, 환원적 통섭을 가지고 설명하기 어려운 영역이거나 개념이다. 이를 토대로 교과통합의 관점에서 환원적 통 섭[統攝]의 한계와 가법적 통섭[通涉]의 실제적 가능성을 집중적으로 논의하였다. 이를테면, 교과내용 중 언어화(articulation)되지 않는 영역 문제와 오우크쇼트(Oakeshott)의 ‘경험의 양상’ 문제는 환원적 통섭의 핵심인 ‘설명’의 기능을 가지고 다루어질 성격의 문제가 아니다. 결론적으로, 교과통합의 논점이 ‘통섭’이 지향하는 ‘본유의 통합’보다는 ‘배움의 통합’에 맞추어진 것이라면, 교과통합 논의는 ‘환원적 통섭’이 갖는 결정적인 단점인 ‘학습영역의 축소’ 문제가 야기되지 않도록 경계할 필요가 있다. 즉 교육과정 논의에서 ‘학습영역의 축소’를 경계하기 위하여 ‘통섭’의 의미는 아이들을 편협한 심성에 매이지 않게 한다는 교과통합 원래 취지에 비추어 ‘환원적 통섭’보다는 ‘가법적‧융합적 통섭’의 의미를, ‘수직적 통섭’보다는 ‘수평적 통섭’의 의미를, 그리고 ‘統攝’보다는 ‘通涉’의 의미를 우위에 두고 교과통합 논의가 이루어져야 한다는 점을 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study has tried to show whether the sense of consilience can contribute to the problems of curriculum integration. For this, the concept of consilience is to be examined as two forms of it: the additive or confluent consilience and the reductive consilience. As a result of argument in this paper it concludes that there is the limit and pitfall in the concept of reductive consilience to apprehend the curriculum integration. The adoption of reductive consilience for curriculum integration can actually reduce the scopes and boundaries of the contents the pupils should learn in the light of the idea of liberal education. Thus our concern should be focused on the sense of additive or confluent consilience rather than reductive one that Edward O. Wilson has emphasized. As shown in the paper, there are some activities and the fields of knowledge that cannot be reduced to any other activities, and hence ones that we should treat as separate and independent subjects. The concept and the discourse of ren (仁), as adopted in the classical Confucianism and neo-Confucianism, is to be a quite example for the counter-argument against the Wilsonian consilience. In a word, the argument for curriculum integration under the name of consilience should be tackled not to lessen but to enlarge the scope of various fields and forms of knowledge that pupils have to learn, as it initially aims.
