Abstract

Kim Goengpil(1454-1504), styled Hanhwondang, did not leave a collection of writings. 12 poems, 1 prose, and 4 essays are recognized as his works. This is because he made more efforts to practice the Way than writing miscellanies. The Kyeonghyeonrok, posthumously edited collection of his records, is the only available reference to his world of thoughts. The purpose of this essay is to discuss about his writings and his attitude towards life. His poems reflect the world-view of the Study of Principle and the Study of the Way both of which he intended to pursue through his life. He retained the attitude of the Study of the Way and trained himself with its doctrines. This fact shows that the ideology embedded in his poems is closely related to his actual life that was based upon practice, the mandate of heaven and righteousness. Based on this, we may distinguish his poems from others written by intellectuals that ‘contains’ the Way, and thus understand that poetry of the Study of the Way has begun by Kim. On the other hand, it is noteworthy that Kim Goengpil serves as an exemplar of the scholar of the Study of the Way by establishing the practical principle of ‘Keeping the Reverence and Retaining the Sincerity’.
