Abstract
Kim Gweng-Pil, also known as Hanhwondang (1454∼1504) is well-reputed as an 'advocate of Dohak, Taoist Studies' or one of the 'Five Sages of the East'. However, there are only a few materials remaining for us to specifically verify the lives and academic world of newly emerged scholars of the King Seongjong period including Kim Gweng-Pil. It is mainly because they had to endure political purges before they even had a chance to bear fruit in academia and also because many documents were lost during the time. Thus, a lot of studies on their lives and academic world depend on fragmentary words and vague memories of posterity. When we examine Gyeongheonrok, a compilation of Kim Gweng-Pil related materials, we can ascertain the facts. However, Gyeongheonrok was appended several times by future scholars and descendants so it may have become either uncertain due to the long time span or a little exaggerated due to the distinct purpose of enshrining the temples of Confucius. There might be some alienation from the real Kim Gweng-Pil. There are limitations especially to explore in detail how Kim Gweng-Pil entered the course of Taoist studies through what teacher-student relationship and relationships with fellow scholars and what post he occupied at the period. Therefore it is necessary to excavate and then make use of the testimony and shared correspondence poems with his friends and teachers for comparison with the materials of posterity restructured by their memories. Among His friends are Nam Hyo-on, Yi Sim-won, Shin Young-hee, Yi Hyeon-son and Kim Il-son; his teachers include Kim Jong-jik and Kim Maeng-seong. These people met him and interacted with him directly. Saumyeonghengrok (師友名行錄) written by Nam Hyo-on, who was close to Kim Gweng-pil, is very significant in that sense. This article closely examines the journey of life and academic world of Kim Gweng-pil, keeping in mind that fact. As a result, Kim Gweng-pil met teachers such as Kim Jong-jik and Kim Maeng-seong after his twenties and studied their writings, cultivating his mind and seeking to establish himself in life through the state examinations. He especially acknowledged and strived to practice Sohak (小學) as a new spirit of the times through Sohakgae activity which promoted the teachings of Sohak by scholars of Seonggyungwan, educational institution as well as the teachings of Kim Jong-jik. However, that was discouraged by bureaucratic scholars and he became deeply immersed in Taoist studies starting in his thirties. Thus he emerged as an honorable man and teacher of the new Age. He had some disputes with his friends, Nam Hyo-on, Kim Il-son and teacher Kim Jong-jik due to differences in recognition of the times through the process. However he never broke with them or went his own separate way as future generations say. They were trustworthy teachers and students who sharpened the spirit of the times and fellow scholars who walked the same path until death.
