본 논문은 1934년 발표된 두 편의 탐정소설 <염마>와 <수평선 너머로>에 대한 연구이다. 이 두 작품은 같은 해 두 달의 차이를 두고 각각 『조선일보』와 『매일신보』에 발표된다. 동시기, 엄밀히 말해서 약 두 달의 시간차를 두고 채만식과 김동인이라는 당대 중견 문인들을 섭외하여 조선탐정문학사상 최초로 장편 창작물의 연재를 감행한 이들의 의도란 무엇이었을까. 본 논문에서는 당대 조선의 사회 문화적 맥락 속에서 그 의도를 읽어내는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 이 두 작품의 창작이 ‘과학조선’건설로 상징되었던 일련의 민족주의 운동과 제국주의의 확장을 위한 방첩의식의 강화라는 상반된 상황과 맞물려 있음은 주목할 만한 사항이다.
Abstract
The current study is a study on two detective stories <Yeomma> and <Hover the Horizon> that were published in 1934. The two stories were published in 『Chosun Ilbo』 and 『Maeilsinbo』, respectively, with the interval of two months in the same year. Strictly speaking, what are the newspaper companies' intention to publish the full-length novels serially for the first time in the Joseon's detective literature history by having two leading writers at the time, Chae Man-sik and Kim Dong-in, write the novels with the about two-month time difference? The current study aims to analyze the intention in the social and cultural context of Joseon at that time. It is also remarkable that the creation of those two stories are also related with two different situations; nationalism movements and reinforce of a sense of prevention of espionage to expand imperialism that represent the construction of Science Chosun.
