Abstract
This paper analyzes Day books(日記), Liabilities Ledgers(他給長冊), and Assets Ledgers(外上長冊) preserved in the household of Pak Yŏngjin in the Republic of Korea. These accounts provide a perfectly articulated accounting set as recorded by merchants in the city of Kaesŏng and date from 1887 to 1900. This paper clarifies credit terms with their special journalizing abbreviations, arithmetic signs to indicate interest rates, and symbols, and provides a table showing an unbroken series of interest rates from the shortest to the longest maturity. The sources always distinguish day-to-day differences that reflected the condition of the money market. A serial compilation of the rates show us the volatility of some rates, especially short-term rates. The Kaesŏng credit structure is addressed also for its similarities with modern forms. The Kaesŏng merchants developed able accounting procedures to circulate money quickly, correctly, and profitably and their bookkeeping system reduced transaction costs for short-term debt. Quantitative analysis of the credit practices refined through effective bookkeeping concludes that, because of the efficiency of the bookkeeping system investors were able to invest their surplus money and withdraw funds at any time to exploit other investment opportunities.
