초록

본 연구는 개성상인 후손 박영진가에 소장된 조선 후기 일기장, 외상장책, 타급장책, 주회계책의 삼포 경영 관련 거래 기입을 분석한 연구이다. 본 연구에서는 삼포경영과 관련된 기입이 일기장과 외상장책 그리고 주회계책에 각각 어떻게 분개(Journalizing)․전기(Posting)․요약(Summation)되어 있는지를 제시하여 한국 고유의 제조원가계산 시스템의 특징을 파악한다. 이를 위하여 거래발생순서대로 기입된 일기장의 인삼 제조과정 관련 기입과 오늘날 제조원가(재공품) 계정에 해당되는 외상장책의 각 삼포별 종삼(種蔘)구입비, 삼포 조성에 투입되는 재료비, 그리고 삼포 경작 노동에 투입된 노무비계정을 중심으로 제조원가 계산구조를 제시한다. 본 연구를 통하여 개성상인의 송도치부법은 상업거래 뿐만 아니라 인삼 제조 과정의 원가 계산을 위해서도 기능한 것을 구명한다. 본 연구에 의해 개성상인의 3대 상업제도로서 알려진 시변제도, 차인제도, 송도치부법은 인삼 제조 산업의 정치한 원가 계산을 위해서도 발달해 왔음을 제시할 수 있게 되었다. 또한 본 연구에 의해 합리주의 문화의 실체로서 개성상인의 삼포 경영활동을 보다 구체적으로 실증할 수 있게 되었다. 결론적으로 그 동안 한국 역사학계와 경영사학계에서 꾸준히 제기해온 식민지 이전 조선 후기에 이미 내재적으로 근대적인 자본주의적 경영활동이 존재해왔다는 가설에 더욱 확고한 근거를 제공하게 되었다.

Abstract

This paper employees a cost analysis to explain the predominance of Kaesŏng merchants in the ginseng industry. Ginseng production takes from two to six years and produces an extremely valuable produce like the Jewish diamond industry. The paper addresses the capitalist bookkeeping technology that established a formal rationality in the pursuit of profit. The paper finds cost accounting to have been essential to the ginseng industry. Finally, what does the existence of such a sophisticated system tell us about late Chosŏn society? Max Weber famously linked capitalism, rationality, double-entry bookkeeping, and European religion to explain why capitalism arose only in Europe, but the findings here show that capitalism, rationality, and double-entry bookkeeping existed in Chosŏn-period Kaesŏng.
